Understanding Limit Switches In Today’s Automation Industry

In today's world of the automation industry, limit switches and sensors play a vital role. A limit switch is an electromechanical device composed of an actuator connected to a range of contacts. The movement of a mechanical component or the presence of an object activates a limit switch. When an object contacts the actuator, the limit switch operates to make or break an electrical circuit.

The terms normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) are employed to describe the states of switches. Limit switches are available in various configurations, including NO (Normally Open), NC (Normally Closed), and some limit switches with a combination of the two NO plus NC.

Some Commonly Used Limit Switches In Today's Modern Industry

  • Top End Plunger Limit Switch
Top End Plunger Limit Switch
Force at top end

In this type of limit switch, the mechanical force is from the side.

  • Side Plunger Limit Switch
Side Plunger Type Limit Switch
Force from Side

In this type of limit switch, the mechanical force is from the side.

  • Steel Roller Plunger Limit Switch
Steel Roller Plunger Limit Switch
Force by 35 Degree CAM

In this type of limit switch, the mechanical force is given by 35 Degree CAM from the side.

  • Thermoplastic Roller Lever Switch
Thermoplastic Roller Lever Switch
Force By 35 Degree CAM 2

In this type of limit switch, the mechanical force is given by 35 Degree CAM from the side.

  • Adjustable Thermoplastic Roller Lever Switch
Adjustable Thermoplastic Roller Lever Switch
Force by 35 Degree CAM 3

In this type of limit switch, the mechanical force is given by 35 Degree CAM from the side and the roller height is adjustable.

  • Steel Rod Lever Limit Switch
Steel Rod Lever Limit Switch
Force by moving part (1)

In this type of limit switch, the mechanical force is given by the moving part from side and the rold height is adjustable.

  • Cat’s whisker Limit Switch
Cat’s whisker Limit Switch

In this type of limit switch, the mechanical force can be applied from multidirectional.

All the plunger-type and the cat's whisker limit switches work for mechanical linear movement applications. And all the lever-type limit switches work for mechanical rotary movement applications in automation industry. Cat's whisker limit switches is a multidirectional switch.

Applications Of Limit Switch In Today's Modern Industry

    • Detects the presence/absence of an object in linear or rotary mechanical movement
    • Identifies the range in linear/rotary movement
    • Detecting positioning & travel limit in linear/rotary movement
    • Counting object in linear/rotary movement
    • Detects speed in linear/rotary movement
    • When unsafe conditions arise, to break a live circuit
    • To check the open and close of industrial doors

Advantage Of Using Limit Switch In Today's Automation Industry

    • Suitable for use in any automated industrial setting
    • Available in various degrees of IP protection such as IP66, IP67, and IP68, etc
    • Supports Temperature ranges from-25 to +100 degrees Celsius
    • Available in several degrees of IK protection such as IK03, IK06, IK07 & IK08, etc
    • In terms of accuracy and repeatability, it is perfect
    • Has the ability to switch loads with a high inductance
    • Supports actuation speed from 0.5 m/s to 2m/s
    • Mechanical durability is approximately 30 million operating cycles.
    • Can handle high current approximately ten amps at 230 AC
